"Stars & Bars" 1st National Flag
Reproduction based on a First National Flag in the American Civil War Museum, (Museum of the Confederacy) This flag was listed by the U.S. War Department as having been captured at Appomattox Station, April 8th by New York Cavalry regiment. No one knows what regiment it belonged too. Measurements are 29” X 60” inches, has two rope loops for attaching to a flagpole this flag is completely hand sewn, made of wool bunting with cotton stars by N.J. Sekela.
This “Stars and Bars “flag is a good representation of one of the popular styles of the first national flag many regiments marched off to war with or perhaps seen flying from a government building or a ship as the first flags were often “homemade” versions. We chose this flag for those reasons and because of the large stars and long length it has the appearance of having been made by someone’s grandmother or maybe a “sewing circle of wives from a regiment. This is a beautiful flag in person and is most suitable for many living history scenarios.
