Virginia Flag of 1861
Commonwealth of Virgina Flag, made of (dupioni) silk, stronger than regular silk, with hand painted state seal on both sides of flag, hand sewn onto the blue material, The flag is approximately 3’ X 5’ (roughly the same size as an AOT Battle flag), flag attaches to a flagpole with two cotton ties.
This flag was made by G.M. Whitla, the originals were carried by Virginia regiments in the first years of the war as well as militia units and some government use as well.
Notice some of the differences between the modern state flag and the wartime version, “Virginias” spear is pointed upwards as a sign of victory, rather than pointed down as on the modern version. She holds a sword in her hand, she wears a European style helmet, rather than a Greek or Roman one. She wears an armored breast plate and is fully clothed.
We only have one of these beautiful flags.
